The defending champion Spain joins the likes of France and Italy as defending champions who failed to make it pass the group stage and the biggest upset is from Group D the underdog Costa Rica topping the log in that Group while England could only earn themselves just a point and Italy With 3 points both failed to make it out of the Group stage.

Delima Ronaldo scored his 15th all time World Cup goal at the World Cup against the Black stars of Ghana (Korea / Japan 2002) making him the highest all time goal scorer in the history of the world cup, Miroslav Klose of Germany came in as a substitute against Ghana with 14 all time World Cup goals already and also scoring his 15th goal against the African side.
Ahmed Musa scored twice against Argentina in the last group stage match making him the only Nigerian player to ever score 2 goals in a single World Cup match and Algeria also joined the Super Eagles in the round of 16 after a 1-1 draw against Russia. This is the first time the North African side is making it pass the group stage though they are the first African side to earn a victory at the World Cup in 1982 against Western Germany and its also the first time two African sides made it to the round of 16, Algeria also made history by scoring 4 goals in a match against South Korea the highest an African side has ever scored in a single World Cup match.
Cameroon though had a bad outing at the World Cup but also made history by being the first African side to ever score against Brazil at the World Cup while Ghana's captain scored his sixth World Cup goal against Germany making him the highest African all time goal scorer at the World Cup.
Two players from same club Muller and Shaqiri both scored a Hat-trick each, Messi breaks his World Cup goal drought and has been scoring in every game in the group stage at the World Cup
