Aston Villa FC chairman Randy Lerner has revealed that he would leave
the club in the summer even if he fails in selling the club.
The American billionaire has been searching for a buyer for over a year, and has valued his club at between £150m and £200m.
In a rare interview with The Times, Lerner admits he should have
stepped down several years ago after watching the claret and blues
battle against relegation for the last four season.Lerner, who has been blasted by supporters for losing interest and not
spending enough on improving the squad, told the Times: “I don’t
disagree with the criticism.“And what I should have done several years back was bring in a chairman.”
Villa survived by the skin of their teeth this season and boss Tim Sherwood insists they are now on the up under his leadership.
Takeover talks are continuing with several parties, though. including groups backed from China and the United States.
A consortium — led by Paul Smith, the former Chelsea chief executive, and Tony Adams are thought to be struggling to raise enough funds to meet Lerner’s valuation.
The Villa owner said: “Yes, the club remains for sale.
“But as we’ve seen, ‘club for sale’ doesn’t necessarily mean it will change hands so fast.”
