The LA officials, put him top of their list because of his experience in assisting London's winning bid for the 2012 Olympic Games.
The retired England captain also has a deep personal connection to the California city he spent six seasons playing for LA Galaxy from 2007.
A Los Angeles source said: “He was approached for his thoughts by some very senior people involved with the bid – and he’s happy to help.
“David has got so much experience – he worked with the London 2012 team and also on the bid to bring the 2018 football World Cup to England – that it makes perfect sense to ask him what he thinks.
“On top of that he knows and loves LA – he lived here and became a big part of its scene.
“His involvement in the bid is very much low-key. He’s staying behind the scenes, rather than becoming a figurehead as he has on previous campaigns, but his input is very much valued and appreciated.”
