Qatar's Finance Minister has revealed that the country is spending
around $500m per week on preparations for the 2022 World Cup which will
be held in the Middle-Eastern country.
Ali Shareef Al-Emadi said the figure covers all infrastructure
projects ahead of football's primary international competition. The
building of stadia is a major cost for the competition, with other
expenses including a new airport, roads and hospitals.
Initial estimates suggest the emirate will spend more than $200bn
before hosting the World Cup, around 18 times the amount spent by Brazil
to deliver 2014.
Hundreds of thousands of migrant workers, largely from South Asian
nations, have been brought to the country to enable preparations, with
the Qatari government passing legislation in December to improve their
working conditions
