REU_1949196
Swedish capital Stockholmsubmit their bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games over financial concerns, council bosses said.
It is the second consecutivre time that Stockholm has withdrawn following similar action by the city's then ruling centre-right coalition in 2014 over the 2022 games.
The Green Party opposition is understood to have been a major factor behind the decision to withdraw.
Green Party local leader Daniel Helldén said: “We want Stockholm to be a living city that is also able to host major events. But when there are great risks that the Stockholmers will have to foot the bill we believe saying no is the most responsible thing to do in this situation,”
The host of the 2026 Winter Olympics will be elected by the IOC in 2019.
Sion, Switzerland, anf Erzurum, Turkey, arew the only two bid cities left.
The next two willbe hosted in the South Korean city of Pyeongchang in 2018 before Beijing takes over in 2022
