An 81st
minute goal from Chijoke Akuneto made the difference for MFM FC to qualify for
the next stage of African Champions League in only the first team continental
match at the renovated Agege Stadium in Lagos edging AS Real Bamako.
“I want to say a big
thank you to our fans and Nigerians, this goal means a lot to me and I am very
happy because this is my first at this level and I hope to score more,’ said
the match winner Akuneto
The away team started
brightly but there were few chances despite the home team getting into the game
gradually towards the first half to spark things up at the soccer temple which had in attendance the 1st and 2nd
vice-presidents of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Barrister Seyi
Akinwunmi and Shehu Dikko.
The introduction of 17year old midfielder Abayomi Lawal as a replacement
for Ayinde in the 55th minute geared the team up to a brighter
attacking display which later paid off after the youngster turned eyes with
some superb displays which one of them led to a perfect cross that led to the only
goal of the game.
The olukoya boys are
now through to the champions’ league first round and will now face MC Alger of
Algeria at the next round. The Algerians overcame AS Otoho of Congo 9-2 on
aggregate
