President Donald Trump has handed his support to the Los Angeles 2024
Olympic and Paralympic bid. However, the recently-inaugurated US leader
has expressed doubts over whether his proposed immigration policy will
affect the competition.
Trump’s administration is seeking to introduce a ban on visitors and
refugees from seven predominantly Muslim nations – Iran, Iraq, Libya,
Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – and their efforts come with Los
Angeles entering the final stages of an Olympic bid race that also
includes Budapest and Paris.
It was first reported in December that Trump had expressed support
for the bid, with bid leaders having previously moved to reassure
Olympic voters and stakeholders that the businessman's victory in the
November US Presidential Election would not affect the LA 2024 bid.
“I’ve been asked to support (the bid) and I’ve actually spoken to the
(International) Olympic Committee in Europe,” Trump said. “They wanted
to have an endorsement from me and I was happy to give it. I would love
to see the Olympics go to L.A. It would be terrific. Let’s see what
happens. I would be very happy and honoured if they chose it.”
When asked if he believed his policies would make it tougher for Los
Angeles to win the hosting rights, Trump said: “I don’t know. But
regardless we have to have security in our country. We have to know who
is coming in, if people are coming in with bad intentions we need to
know. They have to come with good intentions, we want strong borders and
extreme vetting
