Rafael Nadal's
record-breaking run ends with shock loss to Dominic Thiem in Madrid Open
quarter-final, the world No.1, was beaten in straight sets by the Austrian,
going down 7-5 6-3.
Five-time Madrid champion Nadal was below his best,
hitting 29 unforced errors in the two sets, but Thiem produced a fine
performance.
It brought
to an end his 21-match unbeaten run, and curtailed his new record of 50
consecutive set wins on a single surface - a record he only claimed on
Thursday, breaking John McEnroe's 34-year record.
The defeat means Roger Federer will replace Nadal as
world number one.
