FIBA WORLD CUP: FRANCE STUNS USA IN QUARTER- FINAL

Champions, United States stunned after a surprise 89-79 loss to France in the quarter-finals of the Basketball World Cup in China on Wednesday. The US had won the past two World Cups and not lost in 58 international games, a run stretching back to 2006

Team USA’s last loss with NBA players on its roster came against Greece in the semifinals of the 2006 world championships. The Americans rebounded to win gold at the Beijing Olympics two years later and also won the two Olympic tournaments that followed. They already had qualified for next year’s Summer Games in Tokyo.

Both teams gave up leads in the second half. France led by 10 early in the third quarter, but the Americans countered with a 31-14 run over the next 10 minutes to take a five-point lead. France then went on a 15-2 run to take a 82-76 lead with just more than two minutes left and closed out the Americans from there.

France will play Argentina in the semi-finals on Friday, with Spain taking on Australia in the other match.

This will be the first time the United States have failed to win a medal at the World Cup since 2002, when they finished sixth.

NBA legend Kobe Bryant Wins Oscar Award For Best Short Animated Film

Kobe Bryant
It might have taken Leonardo DiCaprio 22-years to win the Oscar but it took just two years for retired five-time NBA champion, Kobe Bryant to win the Oscar for best short animated film “Dear Basketball,” which was made of his Players Tribune retirement letter on November 29, 2015 announcing his retirement from basketball.

The film depicts Bryant as a child dreaming of basketball glory and as an N.B.A. star. Bryant said the film was “about the emotional journey of having a dream, believing it’ll come true; it comes true, then the realization that you have to wake up from that dream and move on to another.”

When Bryant ended his career in 2016, the LA Lakers retired the two jerseys he wore during his 20-year spell.

In accepting his award, the 39-year-old spoke in defence of athletes' influence on cultural and political life.

He said: "As basketball players, we're really supposed to shut up and dribble. But I'm glad we do a little bit more than that.

"Thank you, Academy, for this amazing honour."

LeBron James Open To switching Captains For The 2019 All-Star Game

LeBron James celebrates as the buzzer expires on the 2018 NBA All-Star game on Sunday
LeBron James said he enjoyed the new revised NBA All-Star game format designed to make the game more competitive and a departure from the traditional Eastern vs Western conference clashes but would be open to switching team captains for the 2019 showpiece in Charlotte.

James was named a team captain for Sunday's game in Los Angeles with Golden State Warriors' star Stephen Curry chosen to lead his opponents.
'I'm not against it, that's for sure,' James said. 'I had a heck of a time doing it in the conference call with Stephen [when they were selecting the teams].
'We're going to try to figure out ways we can continue to get better and better. But if we decided that, just like the coaches, you can't be a coach of a team no matter if your team is No 1 the East or the West every year, they offset it every year.'
'So it would be great to see somebody else next year if they wanted to do that format or they wanted to keep it the same with the two top vote-getters.
'Either or works for me. I've just got to play some good ball in the first half of the season next year to make sure I'm in Charlotte.

NBA Launches Network of International Basketball Schools

Bulls_Cavs
The National Basketball Association (NBA) today announced the launch of NBA Basketball School, a network of tuition-based basketball development programs around the world open to international male and female players ages 6-18.
The first NBA Basketball School launched today in Mumbai, India as part of a multiyear agreement announced today with India On Track (IOT), one of India’s leading sports management, marketing and development companies.  Additional NBA Basketball Schools will be launched in India and around the world in the coming months.
The new initiative adds an additional layer to the NBA’s existing basketball development efforts, including the Jr. NBA, Basketball without Borders (BWB) and NBA Academies.
The Jr. NBA, the league’s global youth basketball participation program for boys and girls, will help identify young players who have the talent to attend NBA Basketball Schools. From there, the top players at each NBA Basketball School will have the opportunity to be selected to attend NBA Academies, the league’s network of elite basketball training centers around the world to develop top international male and female prospects.
Registration to attend the NBA Basketball School in Mumbai is now open at indiaontrack.nba.com
“Our goal is to inspire more young male and female players to learn the game under the guidance of established coaches with proven training techniques,” said NBA Vice President, International Basketball Operations & Head of Elite Basketball, Brooks Meek.  “The NBA Basketball School builds an additional track between the Jr. NBA and NBA Academies with the goal of increasing the pool of players who have the talent to attend our academies around the world.”
“There has never been a more exciting time for the growth of basketball in India,” said NBA India Managing Director Yannick Colaco.  “Between NBA Academy India welcoming 24 elite prospects and the launch of NBA Basketball Schools with our partner India On Track, we are investing more than ever in identifying and training India’s aspiring young players.”
“We are now at the cusp of a new phase in India’s sporting journey, and to ensure its continued growth we need to lay down strong foundations for basketball,” said India On Track Founder and Chief Executive Officer Vivek Sethia. “This initiative jointly executed by the NBA and India On Track will help to create a platform to identify and engage the untapped basketball potential in India thereby creating a larger talent pool for academies to choose from.”
Each NBA Basketball School will feature year-long, tuition-based programs open to international male and female players ages 6-18. The NBA Basketball School curriculum, which is designed to help players, parents, coaches and organizations better understand the process of improvement, has been developed by the NBA’s Elite Basketball Development team in consultation with current and former NBA coaches, former NBA players, and player development experts.
The comprehensive curriculum covers oncourt training, strength and conditioning, and basketball education for young players ages 6-18 and will be implemented by local coaches working directly with the NBA’s International Basketball Operations staff around the world.
The NBA Basketball School in Mumbai builds on the NBA’s existing basketball and youth development initiatives in India. The Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA program has reached more than 3.5 million youth and trained more than 3,000 physical education instructors nationwide since its launch in 2013.
In November 2016, the NBA announced its plan to launch NBA Academy India, an elite basketball training center in Delhi National Capital Region (NCR) for the top male and female prospects from throughout India.  NBA Academy India, the first of its kind in the country, will open in May.

"So, for a leader of a team and for me personally, I just hate to deal with this s--- again.
"It's just too big of a piece to our team to have to deal with in another training camp. Like I said, hopefully things get resolved fast, because you know how big and important he is to our team."

NBA strips All-Star game from Charlotte due to LGBT law

The NBA has stripped Charlotte of the NBA All-Star game, citing a law in the city’s state of North Carolina that limits anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay and transgender people.
It is the first time a major sporting event has been stripped from a city because of the treatment of the LGBT community.
The NBA has continually outlined its opposition to the law, known as HB2, since it was introduced in March, and the NBA's decision comes less than a month after state legislators decided not to change it.
The league said in a statement: “Since March, when North Carolina enacted HB2 and the issue of legal protections for the LGBT community in Charlotte became prominent, the NBA and the Charlotte Hornets have been working diligently to foster constructive dialogue and try to effect positive change. We have been guided in these discussions by the long-standing core values of our league. These include not only diversity, inclusion, fairness and respect for others but also the willingness to listen and consider opposing points of view."
“Our week-long schedule of All-Star events and activities is intended to be a global celebration of basketball, our league, and the values for which we stand, and to bring together all members of the NBA community – current and former players, league and team officials, business partners, and fans. While we recognise that the NBA cannot choose the law in every city, state, and country in which we do business, we do not believe we can successfully host our All-Star festivities in Charlotte in the climate created by HB2.”
Concerns over HB2 have been raised by a number of sports bodies. The law states that transgender people must use restrooms corresponding to the sex on their birth certificates in many public buildings. It also excludes sexual orientation and gender identity from anti discrimination protections related to the workplace, hotels and restaurants.
