A group of Manchester United fans are planning a bizarre attempt to lure Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford, according to the Daily Star.
The United Reel supporters group intend to fly a banner reading ‘Cristiano Come Home’ over Villarreal’s El Madrigal stadium when they entertain Real Madrid this Saturday to prove to the Portuguese star ‘how much the United faithful still love and support him’.
Ronaldo left the Reds for Madrid in 2009 for a then world-record fee of around £80m and has often spoken of his desire for a return to Old Trafford.
However, he appeared to rule that out this week, at least for the time being, when he commented after his four-goal haul against Elche on Tuesday that “my future is at Madrid”.
Nonetheless, it has not deterred the United Reel members, who have issued a statement.
“Members from all over the world have donated their own money and resources to fund a mid-game message, flown by plane during the upcoming Villarreal vs Real Madrid football match, in a bid to demonstrate to Cristiano Ronaldo how much the United faithful still love and support him.
“With the current uncertainty regarding Cristiano Ronaldo's future, UNITED REEL deem it essential that the player can not only feel, but see how much the fans still love him and how proud they are of his achievements since he left Manchester United,” it read.
