Video assistant referees may be used in English football as soon as August.
The system was initially mooted to be trialled in January 2018, but may now be brought forward to this start of the 2017-18 season.
The EFL Cup first round is now a prospective start date, with EFL Chief Executive Shaun Harvey saying, "The board will consider allowing the EFL Cup to be utilised.''
Approval for the technology to be used in the EFL Cup could come in May.
Competitions to have already utilised the technology include the World Club Championship and the Bundesliga.
